Difference between base heating and topup heating
What is the difference between base heating and topup heating? To me it sounds like topup heating is only additional, but that is what is the default.

What is the difference between base heating and topup heating? To me it sounds like topup heating is only additional, but that is what is the default.
Base heating is typically a heat source that costs less to operate but which has limited capacity. A heat pump is a common example. The top-up heat source will be activated when more capacity is needed.
The default system of ESBO has a fixed efficiency, unlimited capacity heat source and since it has unlimited capacity, it must act as a top-up heater.
